Jefferson County School District - Conifer Water Treatment Plant

Conifer, CO

The water treatment plant serving the Conifer Area Public Schools was designed to treat 175 GPM, but due to the high solids in the raw water, the capacity of the plant was actually 75 gpm. In addition, the filter required backwashing approximately once every hour. Bai Engineers (BE) entered a contract with TTG Engineers to discover the cause and to provide a system to minimize backwash frequency, improve water quality, and increase remote operability.

During the evaluation, BE determined that the backwash from the filters in combination with the use of KMnO4 was increasing the manganese in the water. To remove these contaminants, BE recognized that KMnO4 was not required as an oxidant because prechlorination was sufficient.

Completion Date: Summer, 2016
Key untreated water quality parameters are:
  • Turbidity < 10 NTU
  • TOC < 2 mg/L
  • Iron < 3 mg/L
  • Manganese < 1 mg/L

Major treatment process included:
  • Dual-media filtration
  • Ultrafiltration

BE Role as a Sub-Contractor to TTG:
Pilot-testing and process design including hydraulic profile, unit process, and plan and specification submittal.
